How Cardiff looked before the new St David's shopping centre

The capital wasn't always as shiny

It's one half of Wales' biggest shopping centre, with more than a million sq ft of retail and leisure space that cost £675m to build.

It's also home to the likes of John Lewis, the revamped Central Library and the luxury Hayes apartments and has become part of the architectural furniture for those visiting Cardiff city centre.

Yet, less than 10 years ago, the St David's shopping centre's more recent wing - or St David's 2 as it was called back then - didn't even exist, with buildings like Oxford Arcade, the Tredegar Street multi-storey, Toys R' Us and St David's market still standing in its stead.

These photos show how the site where hundreds of thousands of shoppers flock each year has changed beyond recognition through time.
