David Hasselhoff's wife Hayley has paid tribute to her former Debenhams colleagues as the high street chain announced her old store is shutting for good.

The 40-year-old was working on the make-up counter of the store in 2011 when she met her future husband, actor David, on a night out in Cardiff while he was filming Britain's Got Talent.

It was a fairytale romance of the shopworker and the Hollywood star as Hayley carried on working in Debenhams while dating the Baywatch actor.

The pair fell in love and started their new life in Los Angeles.

The store in Merthyr Tydfil is now being permanently closed after Debenhams said it was "unable to agree appropriate terms with the building's landlord".

It means the Merthyr store will not reopen after lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Hayley still has fond memories of her co-workers who she said were "like family."

She said: "When I worked at Debenhams I realised that many of my co-workers had been there for many years and we all bonded with each other.

"We were like family. It's sad to see this store close. I wish all the staff heartfelt luck and joy for the future."

Hayley and David married in Italy in 2018. She swapped the Welsh Valleys for the Hollywood Hills and now boasts A-list neighbours such as Stevie Wonder and Justin Bieber.

But she still misses the neighbours in in her home village of Glynneath.

Speaking after her big move, Hayley said: "In Glynneath, what I liked was that you would wake up in the morning and you hear 'Hello Mrs Jones' or 'Hello Mrs Evans'.

"I do miss that community feel I suppose, because when I walk out of the house, there's no one on the street, just silence."

A Debenhams spokesman said: "Debenhams can confirm that its store in Merthyr Tydfil will not be reopening as we were unable to agree appropriate terms with the landlord of the building.

"This is in no way a reflection on the commitment and professionalism of our colleagues which has been exemplary, and we will work with them to support them through this process."

A Welsh Government spokesman said the Merthyr Tydfil Debenhams store was eligible for a rates relief scheme.

A spokesman said: “We are providing more than £350m of non-domestic rates relief to all properties in the retail, leisure and hospitality sector with a rateable value up to £500,000.

“This is part of a £1.7bn support package to provide businesses in Wales with certainty and stability during these challenging times – this includes the £500m Economic Resilience Fund which is unique to Wales and makes this the most generous package of support in the UK.

“We will continue to consider how to best target our support where it will have the greatest impact in sustaining jobs and the longer term viability of our economy.”

Gerald Jones MP for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney said the closure was a “huge blow.”

“This is a huge blow for Merthyr Tydfil, which comes at what is already a hugely difficult time for retail businesses everywhere," he said

“Debenhams is a popular store at the Cyfarthfa Retail Park, and I am deeply disappointed with their decision to close.

“I am encouraging any constituents, particularly staff who are affected by the store’s decision to contact my office with any concerns they may have, or if there’s anything they feel I can help with.”
