A memorial to the war dead was vandalised overnight with red paint and slogans.

The Boer War Memorial on Swansea ’s seafront, opposite St Helen’s rugby ground, was daubed with anarchy symbols, and the words ‘smash empire’ and ‘troops out’.

It is not clear what the slogans were supposed to refer to.

But the action has caused upset to many, including those who have family members recorded on the memorial, which recognises the ultimate sacrifice made by local residents during the South African War, 1900-1902.

Slogans were daubed on the memorial overnight

One person writing on social media said: “How disgusting. These people had no choice but to go to serve this country and gave their lives.”

Another added: "What is wrong with people today? If it wasn't for the soldiers or our armed forces we wouldn't be here today."

And there were calls to prosecute such offenders. "Until one of them is caught, prosecuted and sent down for a few years this won’t stop."

Members of the armed forces have expressed their outrage.

Squadron Leader Phill Flower, of 215 (City of Swansea) Squadron Air Cadets said: “Our society is hugely indebted to our Armed Forces and the commitment their families have to make to support them.

“Such acts of random criminal damage do not reflect the exemplary support and loyalty the general public portray to our armed forces and so far this year the Poppy Appeal reflects this with over £130,000 donated to their welfare, the highest in 100 years.

“Our veterans also play a huge part in the community and we should all be proud of them all.”

A Swansea Council spokesman said work had already been undertaken to remove the damage.

The memorial is located on the foreshore where events and demonstrations will be held as part of the Wales Airshow which takes place on Saturday, July 6 and Sunday, July 7.

And a spokesman for South Wales Police added: “We are aware of this incident and the Swansea city neighbourhood police team will attend today and liaise with the council.”
