Police investigating Madeleine McCann disappearance name German prisoner as prime suspect

A German prisoner has been identified as a suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, detectives have revealed.

The Metropolitan Police have not named the man, 43, who is described as white with short blond hair, possibly fair, and about 6ft tall with a slim build.

The German national is known to have been in and around Praia da Luz on the Algarve coast at the time Madeleine vanished on May 3, 2007, while on holiday with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, and her twin siblings Sean and Amelie.

A half-hour phone call was made to his Portuguese mobile phone around an hour before Madeleine is believed to have gone missing.

Bomb disposal experts blow up suspect items on Gower beach

Bomb disposal units were called to a Gower beach after three suspicious objects were found.

South Wales Police and Oxwich Coastguard Rescue Team arrived at Whiteford Sands after a member of the public came across the suspected ordnance.

Explosive ordnance disposal were alerted to the situation and arrived at the scene at around 9am.

Boy, 13, forced his way into woman's house and beat her with metal bar

A boy aged just 13 carried out a shocking attack on a woman in her own home, a court has heard.

The teenager forced his way into his victim’s house after knocking on the back door and set about the terrified woman with a metal pole.

When police found him the boy denied being responsible but he was linked to the property by footwear marks left at the scene.

Bridesmaid attacked by jealous boyfriend who accused her of flirting

A bridesmaid was attacked on her sister’s wedding night by her jealous boyfriend accusing her of flirting at the reception.

Jessica Gittings, 25, left the reception with drunken Aaron Williams, 26, before he challenged her about fancying other men.

Jessica was still wearing her maid of honour dress when jealous Williams accused her of cheating on him and put her through a 90-minute violent ordeal at her mother’s home.

Williams left Jessica with a footprint on her face and cuts and bruises across her body.

Former mayor found dead at home aged 45

Samantha Dodd, 45, proudly served as mayor of her hometown of Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, following in the family footsteps of her father who had also been mayor.

She had been an active Conservative councillor for 11 years but friends raised the alarm when the mother-of-one she failed to return their calls and messages for more than 24 hours.

Police arrived at her two-bedroom cottage in Abergavenny where they found her body.

How Wales looked today as more McDonald's drive-thrus reopened

It seems that if there’s one thing we love in Wales it’s a queue - and today’s reopening of almost 40 McDonald’s drive-thru sites also proved that hundreds of us are desperate for a Big Mac.

The fast food outlet reopened its hatches for service at locations throughout the country - from Cardiff and Swansea, to Merthyr Tydfil, Aberystwyth and Llandudno.

There were tailbacks of cars desperate for a cheeseburger and fries in Treforest, Swansea and Merthyr Tydfil as staff worked in smaller teams while adhering to social distancing measures to be able to operate safely.

Schools to reopen in Wales

Schools in Wales will re-open to all pupils on June 29 nearly three months after being ordered to shut in March, Education Minister Kirsty Williams has announced.

Term will be extended by one week to end on July 27 to give children and staff time to catch up before the summer break. The autumn half term in October will be extended from one week to two.

A video has emerged showing a man smashing a window after finding a dog inside a vehicle at a supermarket car park on a hot day.

The footage was captured by Zoey Thornton who was shopping at Tesco in Fforestfach, Swansea with her mother on the afternoon of Sunday, May 31.

Nine people have been charged with drug offences following dawn raids in Newport.

More than 70 specialist Gwent Police officers carried out raids on properties in the city as part of Operation Jigsaw on Tuesday morning.

There are reports of queuing traffic on the A466 Wye Valley Link Road at A48 Newport Road (Highbeech Roundabout).

Temporary traffic lights are in place around roadworks causing delays on the approaches to the roundabout.

People from Birmingham sent home from Tenby by police

Multiple vehicles have been stopped travelling from the Midlands to Pembrokeshire to “visit the beaches”.

Officers from Dyfed-Powys Police have halted four vehicles and escorted them out of the county, as those in Wales are still urged to stay local.

The occupants of two vehicles that had travelled from Birmingham to Tenby were unloading beach equipment when police approached them and told them to go home.

While a further two vehicles, also from the Midlands area, were stopped in the village of Stepaside after being driven to Pembrokeshire to visit the beaches.

Enormous queues as Wales' first McDonald's drive-thrus reopen

Enormous queues formed outside McDonald’s in Wales today as it re-opened two of its drive-thrus.

The two McDonald’s outlets in Bridgend were among the 168 sites across the UK to re-open their drive-thrus to the public today.

Hundreds of people eager to get their hands on the fast-food flocked to the restaurants on Pantruthin Farm and Picton Court Retail Park with some customers reporting queues of up to an hour.

Play centre with outdoor splash park set for Llanelli beachfront

A children’s play centre in Llanelli has announced its plans for a huge new development near the town’s beach front.

The Play King, which has been operating in Dafen since 2011, has revealed its plans to relocate to the old CEM Days Car show room in Sandy Road.

The plans to occupy the 17,000 square foot area include both indoor and outdoor soft play facilities, a bowling alley, a sports court, indoor and outdoor go-karting, a sensory room and a splash park.

RNLI crew rescue capsized kayaker near Porthcawl

Porthcawl RNLI’s volunteer crew were tasked by UK Coastguard at 6.47am on Saturday 30 May to assist a kayaker who had capsized between Newton and Tusker Rock.

The kayaker was with a friend but had been unable to get back onto his kayak after capsizing.

The charity’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Rose of the Shires was launched and the crew quickly located the casualty and took both him and his friend onboard.

Despite being cold from being in the water, the capsized kayaker required no further medical attention.

Both kayakers were taken back to the beach at Sandy Bay where the volunteer crew were met by Porthcawl Coastguard Team.

Lifeboat Operations Manager at Porthcawl, Phil Missen MBE said: “The kayakers had a mobile phone and were able to call 999 to contact the UK Coastguard for help.

“Despite the challenges of search and rescues during the Covid-19 pandemic, our lifeboat crew volunteers have been operational throughout and are ready to drop everything at a moments notice to aid those in peril at sea.”

Man smashes car window to rescue dog left inside during hot weather

A video has emerged showing a man smashing a window after finding a dog inside a vehicle at a supermarket car park on a hot day.

The footage was captured by Zoey Thornton who was shopping at Tesco in Fforestfach, Swansea with her mother on the afternoon of Sunday, May 31.

The 29-year-old claims that the dog was inside on its own for “at least 30 minutes”.

Lockdown restrictions could be reintroduced

Some lockdown restrictions could be reintroduced in Wales this winter should coronavirus make a resurgence, Wales' health minister has warned.

Vaughan Gething said it will all depend on the "reservoir" of Covid-19 which exists at the time, as well as people's behaviour.

His comments followed a statement from Wales' chief medical officer Dr Frank Atherton who warned that the virus is "likely to thrive in cooler, indoor environments particularly where people gather closely together".

Death toll rises by seven

The number of people who have died after contracting coronavirus in Wales has risen by seven, it has been announced.

Public Health Wales (PHW) confirmed on Tuesday that the total number of fatalities since the pandemic began now stands at 1,354.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery after allegedly entering a takeaway in Swansea with a knife and demanding “free chips”.

South Wales Police were called to reports of a man threatening staff at Yummies Pizza & Kebab House, in Colwyn Avenue, Winch Wen, yesterday afternoon.

NHS theatre assistant died after testing positive for coronavirus

An NHS healthcare worker from the Philippines who died after complaining of breathing problems had been infected with coronavirus, an inquest has heard.

Allan Macalalad, 44, was employed in the operating department at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff when he became unwell last month.

Paramedics treat man after Caerphilly crash

A man has been treated by paramedics at the scene of an accident in Caerphilly.

The crash happened on Tafwys Walk, Caerphilly at around 9.35am.

A red Fiat 500L collided with a parked white Ford Transit van.

Gwent Police said a man was treated for minor injuries at the scene and the road has been closed.

Number of deaths is now more than 50,000

The number of coronavirus deaths in the UK has passed 50,000, according to new figures.

Grim data from the Office for National Statistics indicate that by May 22,

In England and Wales 22, 43,837 people had died after contracting the virus.

By that date, Scotland’s death toll stood at 2,245, Northern Ireland’s at 504 and 1,254 people had died in Wales.

And since then the Department of Health and Social Care announced 2,652 deaths across the UK - bringing the total confirmed deaths to 50,492.

Gwent Police says: “The road is currently closed whilst emergency services are on scene. Please avoid the area during this time.”

Shark spotted near Welsh beach

A shark was spotted trapped in a pool on a Welsh beach swimming about and probably keen to return to the ocean.

The shark, believed to be a common smooth-hound, was seen on Caswell Bay in Swansea.

MPs will return to Westminster today after the Government dropped virtual proceedings, despite concerns shielding politicians will be unable to attend.
