A Swansea man has been left needing surgery after being assaulted by three men in what is believed to have been a case of mistaken identity.

Johnathan Broom, aged 42, from Clase, was "sliced" twice on his back during the attacked by three men while on his way home after visiting a friend's house on Sunday night.

During the incident, Mr Broom recalled one of the men saying "we've got the wrong man", with another shouting "sorry" before they got back in their car and drove off.

His partner, Danielle Ross, aged 28, said she thought that if the men hadn't realised Mr Broom was 'the wrong man', "they would have killed him".

"He was having drinks at his mates' house and as he was walking home he got to the end of Long View Crescent and he said that he heard a car screeching," Miss Ross said.

"The car pulled up behind him and three men jumped out and started beating him up.

"I think he passed out at some point because he doesn't remember that they sliced his back."

He was also "sliced" across the back twice during the attack

The couple's four-year-old son, Harley, was in their bedroom when Mr Broom managed to get home after the attack.

Miss Ross added: "He managed to make it home and I could hear him saying 'Danielle are you awake?'

"He put the light on in the bedroom and I've never been so frightened. He looked really scary as he was all swollen and there was blood everywhere.

"My son was crying as well as he was in the bedroom. He can sense something is going on and we've told him that 'dad fell off the bike'."

Mr Broom now needs to have an operation to straighten his nose

Mr Broom was then taken to Morriston Hospital by the police and has been told he needs an operation for one of his injuries.

"He's got a broken nose, a fractured eye socket, swollen eyes, bruising and marks on his back," Miss Ross said.

"He's having an operation next week for his nose to straighten it. Only yesterday his nose stopped bleeding and his head is constantly banging.

"I'm quite glad that they realised it was the wrong man because I think they would have killed him.

"We're all in shock about it because he's one of the nicest men and he's so respected around here. I don't know why someone would do this to him.

"Everyone's checking on him and they can't believe it because he's such a nice, genuine man."
