A Cardiff city centre street was cordoned off after a man was stabbed in the early hours of the morning.

Police said they are investigating an alleged assault in the vicinity of Wood Street and St Mary Street at 2am on Friday.

A spokesman said a 33-year-old man from Birmingham was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff with a minor stab wound and was later released.

A 17-year-old boy from the Grangetown area of Cardiff has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent.

He is being questioned at Cardiff Bay police station.

Part of Wood Street, near the Principality Stadium, was taped off and a police van was at the scene for several hours on Friday morning.

There is a significant amount of construction work in the area, with work being done on both the Central Square buildings and the demolition of St David's House on the other side of the road.

South Wales Police said local roads were closed while investigation work was carried out and have now reopened.

Teen being questioned

A spokesman for South Wales Police said that officers were called at 2.am this morning

He said that a 33-year-old man from Birmingham was taken to the University Hospital of Wales with a minor stab wound was subsequently released.

“A 17-year-old boy from the Grangetown area of Cardiff has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent,” he said.

He is being detained at Cardiff Bay police station.

Police have now confirmed that they are investigating an assault in the vicinity of Wood Street and St Mary Street.

Road closed for two hours

Wood Street was completely closed between 4.30am and 6.30am. The inbound side is now open.

There are already some closures in the area because of work to demolish St David’s House.
