A crash involving a lorry and a car on the M4 in Newport closed two lanes on Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened at around 12.30pm on the M4 eastbound at junction 25A A4042 (Newport / Cwmbran) to junction 25 B4596 (Caerleon).

Two of three lanes were initially closed and reopened at around 1.30pm

This had a knock-on effect on traffic and congestion was backed up to junction 28 (Tredegar Park).

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: “At approximately 12.15pm on Wednesday 21st August 2019, Gwent Police were called to a report of a road traffic collision between Junctions 25 and 24, eastbound on the M4.”

“The collision involved a lorry and a BMW. No serious injuries have been reported.”

Gwent Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for an update. It’s understood that they are both at the scene.

The vehicles have now been moved to the hard shoulder. Traffic cameras show heavy traffic in the area.

Traffic is also slow on the westbound of the M4 around J25 and J26.

'45 minute delays'

According to travel service Inrix, drivers in the area can expect delays of around 45 minutes.

The congestion is backing up to J28, so this could affect drivers further along the M4.

One lane of the M4 is closed from J25A to J25 due to a crash involving a lorry and a car.

Two lanes were originally closed, but one lane has since been reopened. One lane remains closed “for safety”.
