Deckchairs were set up in Castle Square, Swansea city centre, yesterday for a family screening of Mary Poppins.

But some claimed what should have been an enjoyable family event soon turned sour for them, because of anti-social behaviour and swearing from a large group at the side of the square.

Comments posted online claimed there were up to 20 people causing disruption, and many appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Police and the council said they had not received any reports of trouble during the event.

But some people wondered whether the images they saw were in keeping with the safe environment Swansea Council had been promoting this week by turning the water purple at Castle Gardens to celebrate Swansea's status as a safe city for a night out.

Some commented that they left before the film ended as a result of what they witnessed.

There have been occasional previous reports of violence and alcohol abuse in the square in central Swansea, where street drinkers sometimes congregate.

A mass brawl took place there in May .

However, Swansea's High Street, just up the road from Castle Square, has been named one of the best in the UK this month .

A spokesman for Swansea Council said: "Any time we hold an event in Castle Square, issues of anti-social behaviour are taken into account and we ensure we have staff available to deal with disruptive groups or individuals - we do this in partnership with local police, if their presence is required.

"In terms of the event recently, we had no reports of either anti-social behaviour or criminal activity."

A South Wales Police spokeswoman said: "We had no incidents reported to us. Anyone who is concerned about crime or anti-social behaviour should contact us so action can be taken.”
