It's not often you can plan for beach weather in Wales during February, but this week could see just you doing just that.

Forecasters think the UK could be set for the warmest February day on record if a predicted surge of warm air arrives - hugely different to the same time last year.

The hottest day of this month on record is 19.7C, but Channel 4 weatherman Liam Dutton says that could be "challenged" later this week.

He says: "Signs that impressively warm air is likely to surge towards the UK and Ireland later.

"If it happens, there's a chance that the record for the UK's warmest February day (19.7C) could be challenged. For context, the same airmass in summer would give temps around 25-28C!"

It comes after highs of 17C were recorded in Rhyl on Friday, making it the warmest place in the UK.

Spring is definitely in the air this week

There has been a lull this weekend with it being more overcast, but high pressure is likely to build as the week goes on drawing winds from the south once again.

The Met Office outlook for Wales for Tuesday to Thursday says: "Many areas look dry with occasional clear or sunny intervals, although breezy. Some thicker cloud could give drizzle near the west coast and over hills at times.

"Generally becoming mild."

The UK outlook to the end of the month says: "Temperatures will widely be above the seasonal average. Towards the end of February and beginning of March, there will probably be a good deal of dry and bright weather.

"Temperatures are most likely to be mild overall, but overnight frosts will be likely."
