Swansea City were made to pay for missing several clear cut chances as they were beaten 3-0 by West Brom at The Hawthorns.

Chris Brunt gave the home side the lead with a free-kick from a tight angle in the 19th minute before Bersant Celina inexplicably missed from the penalty spot after slipping during his run up.

The visitors created numerous openings and saw Sam Johnstone deny the likes of Celina, Daniel James, Wayne Routledge and Connor Roberts.

And the Baggies made them pay with second half goals from Mason Holgate and Jay Rodriguez meaning the Swans go into their FA Cup quarter-final clash with Man City on the back of yet another away defeat.

The last time the two sides met at The Hawthorns, they were playing Premier League football.

Tammy Abraham earned the visitors a point on that occasion after Rodriguez had given the Baggies the lead.

And for the second year running, the Midlands outfit faced Swansea on their home turf with a new man in the dugout.

Alan Pardew was axed prior to last season's second meeting between the two teams, and his replacement, Darren Moore, was sacked in the aftermath of the Baggies' 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town on Saturday, meaning caretaker boss James Shan was tasked with leading West Brom into action against Graham Potter's troops.

Potter went with the same XI that took to the field in the 1-0 defeat to Norwich City at Carrow Road last time out, with winger Routledge making his 250th appearance for the club.

But it was the home side that started the brighter of the two, with Swansea struggling to get out of their own half in the opening 10 minutes.

Jacob Murphy, Rodriguez and Brunt all failed to test Kristoffer Nordfeldt with efforts from distance early on.

The home fans were calling for a penalty in the 12th minute after Mike van der Hoorn appeared to shove Dwight Gayle in the box, although referee Scott Duncan refused to point to the spot.

And they were almost behind within a minute of that penalty appeal as Routledge switched play to Roberts, but the Welshman's curling effort struck the inside of Sam Johnstone's post.

But just as the visitors started to grow into the match, Kyle Naughton brought down Mason Holgate on Swansea's left, and Brunt's drilled cross went right the way through the box and into the back of the net.

After struggling to cause the hosts any real problems, Routledge and Daniel James swapped positions.

And it was a switch that gave Swansea a greater threat going forward as the Baggies struggled to contain James on the left.

Potter will have been wondering how his side didn't get on level terms before the half hour mark as Nathan Dyer's shot deflected into the air, and Routledge volleyed at goal from close range, although his strike was straight at Johnstone.

They had another huge opportunity moments later as James ghosted into the box from the wing, although the Wales international was also denied by Johnstone.

Swansea continued to create clear cut openings and should have levelled as Dyer picked out Celina just inside the area, but the Kosovan's first-time shot was brilliantly saved by the increasingly busy Johnstone.

The away side huffed and puffed and finally thought they were going to get back on level terms as van der Hoorn was brought down in the box by Craig Dawson five minutes before half time.

Celina stepped up to take the spot-kick, but he slipped and failed to make clean contact with the ball to ensure the Swans trailed at the break.

Swansea started the second half where they left off in the first 45 and had yet another golden opportunity to get back on level terms as Routledge found Roberts in space inside the box, but the right-back took too long to pull the trigger and was thwarted by Ahmed Hegazi at the last minute.

James then fired over after being played through by Celina.

And after failing to take their chances, Swansea were punished in devastating fashion as Holgate beat Nordfeldt in the air to head home Brunt's corner to make it 2-0.

Potter's men refused to lie down and still carried a threat as the game ticked beyond the 60-minute mark, with Roberts and Dyer both having efforts at goal to no avail.

And they had another inviting opening as Celina played a slick one-two with James who curled an effort just over the bar in the 68th minute.

The 650 or so travelling members of the Jack Army must have known it was not going to be their night soon after as James flashed a teasing cross through the six-yard box, and Johnstone pulled off a sensational one-handed save to deny Roberts who looked shell shocked to see that his strike didn't bulge the net.

But the Baggies put the icing on the cake five minutes from time as Cameron Carter-Vickers sliced a clearance, and Rodriguez was on hand to lash home to ensure Swansea remain without an away win in the league since New Year's Day.
