Steve Cooper will meet his Swansea City players for the first time when they return for pre-season training this week.

The 39-year-old held his first press conference last Tuesday having been officially announced as Graham Potter's successor earlier this month.

The bulk of the playing squad are expected back at the club's Fairwood training base on Thursday, although there are some expections.

Jordan Ayew and Andre Ayew are both be away with Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament that could have a major say on the Swans' summer transfer plans given that the club are desperate to shift the two attackers off the wage bill.

And others who have recently been away on international duty could also be given extra time off, with the likes of Joel Asoro, Kristoffer Nordfeldt and Bersant Celina set to fly out to the team's training camp in Spain to meet with the rest of the squad early next week.

Wales duo Joe Rodon and Connor Roberts are expected to return as normal, as too are the likes of Borja Baston and Jefferson Montero.

As part of their preparations for the 2019/20 campaign, the Swans will have a week-long training camp in the Andalusia region of southern Spain from June 30 to July 7.

While away, Cooper's troops will take on League Two outfit Mansfield Town in a training match at the Complexo Desportivo in Vila Real de Santo António, Portugal on July 6.

And after a fortnight of training back on home soil, the Swans play the first of four pre-season fixtures in the United Kingdom when they take on Crawley Town at the Broadfield Stadium on Saturday, July 13.

Seven days later, Cooper's side battle it out with Exeter City before taking on Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium at 7:45pm on Tuesday, July 23.

And they round off their pre-season schedule with a clash against Serie A side Atalanta at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday, July 27, seven days before they welcome Hull City to South Wales for their opening fixture of the 2019/20 Championship season.

Speaking about the upcoming campaign, Cooper said: “I think there’s some real good foundations in place in terms of the performance levels, the profile of players currently at the club, which allows us to continue to build.

“I wouldn’t say the restructuring process is in the infancy but I wouldn’t say it’s near the end either. It’s step by step.

“There’s no doubt that the way the team play, that style, is something we have to continue. I fundamentally believe in that. You have to fundamentally believe it if you want to play that way.

“Whatever the game scenario, winning or losing, first five minutes or last five minutes, you have to stick to the way you want to play.

“That is up and running, the style of play, and the player befit that model, so we just need to keep building."
