Sky pundit Jamie Carragher says Gylfi Sigurdsson has failed to produce at Everton following his £45million switch from Swansea City.

The Icelander moved to Goodison Park after a protracted transfer saga in the summer of 2017.

He - and Everton - endured a difficult 2017-18 season, with the Toffees having three different managers and struggling to make a mark in the Premier League, despite spending a significant amount of money.

New manager Marco Silva's men have started the current campaign with a stutter, losing 2-0 to Arsenal in their latest outing. That was on the back of a very disappointing 3-1 home defeat to West Ham the week before.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher was covering the match at the Emirates for Sky and revealed his disappointment with the Icelander's overall impact.

"If you look at his stats he’s a luxury, £45million is massive for Everton, they’ve got to be getting a lot more from him," he said.

"We’re not talking about a young player, he’s 29. He’s got to be doing it now. What they have got back from him for £45 million is not enough."

Gylfi Sigurdsson in action against Arsenal

Sigurdsson has made seven appearances for Everton this term, scoring twice.

Former Toffee Pat Nevin, however, says the 29-year-old just needs the help of his team-mates to thrive on Merseyside.

"It is the dream scenario, really, for him to be playing with the likes of Richarlison, Walcott and Bernard," Nevin told evertonfc.com .

"If he has got that pace and movement in front of him, his quality can come to the fore.

"What he needs is attacking players making intelligent runs because he will find them. And I think if Cenk Tosun keeps making the type of runs he is doing, then goals will come for him, too.

"The good thing for players like Tosun and the other forward players is – when they now they have someone of Sigurdsson’s ability in the side - they will make those runs more often and the ball will land at their feet. I think people enjoy playing with Sigurdsson.

"His set-piece delivery is just extraordinary, too. We all know about his free-kicks and, of course, he can arrive late into the box and score goals. He is a real special player."

In Sigurdsson's defence, he spent most of last term playing on the left-hand side rather in his favoured number 10 role and he made an initially bright start to the campaign, particularly impressing in the win over Southampton.

And, while he ended up on the losing side at the Emirates, he did create chances for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Theo Walcott that the forwards should have done better with.
