Premier League clubs have unanimously agreed to resume contact training in what is a major boost in the process of the 2019/20 season resuming.

Top flight sides continued training under strict measures on May 15, with government guidelines being issued to all clubs.

Clubs were told sessions could be no longer than 75 minutes long in groups of five or fewer players, with contact not being permitted.

But on Wednesday, it was confirmed that all 20 top flight sides voted in favour of holding contact training sessions again as part of a step up to phase two of Project Restart.

A statement read: "Premier League Shareholders today voted unanimously to resume contact training, marking another step towards restarting the Premier League season, when safe to do so.

"Squads are now able to train as a group and engage in tackling while minimising any unnecessary close contact.

"The Premier League’s priority is the health and wellbeing of all participants.

"Strict medical protocols are in place to ensure the training ground is the safest environment possible and players and staff will continue to be tested for Covid-19 twice a week.

"Stage two of the return to training protocol has been agreed following consultation with clubs, players, managers, the PFA, LMA and the Government.

"Discussions are ongoing as work continues towards resuming the season, when conditions allow."

Championship clubs returned to training this week but will see the Premier League update as a major boost to their plans of concluding the current campaign.

June 20 has been mooted as a potential restart date for the second tier, while Premier League clubs are currently working towards doing so a week earlier.

Cardiff City and Swansea City have been training at their Vale and Fairwood sites this week after being given the green light to do so by the Welsh Government, despite the fact the country is still in lockdown, unlike England.

The Bluebirds are currently in ninth place in the league standings while the Swans are 11th, with both Welsh clubs having nine matches left to play.
