Wales's two Championship clubs have ground to make up if they are to enter the Championship play-off picture.

Neither Cardiff or Swansea are out of the running by any means. But any slip-ups have to be few and far between.

Should football get the go-ahead to return next month - and given the latest guidance and instructions it is looking increasingly likely - the two clubs will have to hit the ground running.

When the season was halted because of the coronavirus pandemic in mid-March, Cardiff were ninth in the Championship table and just two points off the play-off spots.

Swansea were two points further back and in 11th. Preston, who occupy the final play-off berth with 56 points, are four points adrift of fifth-placed Nottingham Forest.

Bookmakers, who by and large know the time of day when it comes to such matters, have predictably seen little interest in the relevant promotion and relegation markets over the past two months.

On the exchanges, the online marketplace where fans can bet against each other rather than with a major firm, Leeds United and West Brom are nailed-on certainties to claim promotion.

Current leaders Leeds are as short as 1-12, with the Baggies, who lie second, trading at 1-9. Third-placed Fulham are 6-5, just ahead of Brentford and Forest, with Preston at 7-1.

Cardiff and Swansea are both as long as 12-1.

So how do bookies think the rest of the season will pan out for the Bluebirds and Swans?

The league table is there, but there is nothing in the way of current form to go on.

Does that mean we are in for some shocks in the final weeks of arguably the most turbulent campaign in history?

We asked Christopher Uren, head of trading at  thepools.com  to give us his thoughts.

Are Cardiff or Swansea good enough to make a challenge for automatic promotion?

Cardiff score enough goals but concede too many, whereas Swansea don’t score enough goals but have a decent defence.

I think a play-off place is as good as either team can hope for.Leeds and West Brom are going up this year, resumption permitting.

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

Do you see either of the Welsh clubs reaching the play-offs?

Both clubs have a chance because the Championship is such a competitive league.

Each team in it can beat any other. Both clubs have some tough games left. Both play Leeds fighting for promotion and Middlesbrough fighting off relegation.

I think the difference for Cardiff is that they should play Leeds quickly when the revised fixture list comes out.

Whatever the result is in that match, Cardiff will have time to make up the difference.

Swansea will not have the same luxury, as they are slated to play Leeds much later in their schedule.

I think there’s reasons to be hopeful for both teams, but I think Cardiff are in the better position.

Will the enforced break be a benefit or hindrance to West Brom or Leeds?

This is a unique experience for us all and football is no different.

The only comparison we have is with the Bundesliga. Quality teams such Bayern and Dortmund have continued their good form after the enforced break and so I can’t see why Leeds or West Brom couldn’t do the same.

Both teams have a cushion to third place and I can’t see either missing out on promotion now.

Is there a side capable of coming from nowhere to surprise everyone and claim a promotion or play-off spot?

Any team from Bristol City to QPR (seventh to 13th place) can still make it if they put a good run together.

Of those, QPR have been on a good run - winning three of their last five - and maybe have the momentum to make a charge to the play-offs.

In the past few months, has there been any activity in the Championship market?

There has been limited betting on league winners due to the uncertainty around their completion.

Customers would rather place bets on the Bundesliga for now, until a resumption schedule has been announced.
