Swansea City are on the verge of lifting the FAW Youth Cup for the tenth time after edging their way past South Wales rivals Cardiff City in a tense semi-final at Llanelli Town's Stebonheath Park.

The Swans will play either TNS or Cardiff Metropolitan University in the final, but will surely be hot favourites to take home the trophy yet again.

There were some strong performances from players on both teams last night. We take a look at those who shone brightest.

Swansea City

Ben Cabango

The centre-back was in dominant form against his former club, winning almost everything in the air and dominated a Cardiff front line that had previously scored 38 goals in this competition.

Ben Cabango looks a promising prospect for Swansea City

Cabango has already been tipped for a bright future, having already enjoyed a successful spell at Welsh Premier League champions The New Saints earlier in the season, and has been a prominent figure at youth level for the Swans ever since.

He was in commanding form once again here, marshaling the defence brilliantly, while also making several telling contributions, including a brilliant last ditch tackle to deny Cardiff's Dan Griffiths early on.

Kees de Boer

Another youngster tipped for big things, de Boer has impressed at youth level since arriving on a three-year deal from Ajax.

The defensive midfielder showed a touch of class in the Swans midfield on Wednesday night, pulling the strings and mopping up nicely just in front of the defence.

Kees De Boer of Swansea is challenged by Laurence Wootton of Cardiff.

He showed some very classy touches too and looks to be one of the more technically promising players coming through the ranks of this side.

Ollie Cooper

The forward scored the only goal of the game and terrorised the Bluebirds all evening.

The 19-year-old signed a new two-year deal at the club last month, having already featured heavily under Cameron Toshack and Gary Richards with the club's under-23s. On this evidence, it's easy to see why he's so highly rated.

Cooper's goal was a marvellous demonstration of his predatory instinct in the final third, chasing down what looked to be a lost cause in Cameron Evans' hopeful high ball forward, busting a gut to pinch possession from Cardiff goalkeeper George Ratcliffe to slot into an empty net.

CARDIFF CITY

Dan Griffiths

Having come into this game with an incredible tally of 23 goals in 20 games in all  competitions, the former Liverpool striker looked the most likely source of joy for Cardiff on a night where they otherwise struggled to break down their opponents.

There were several intriguing battles with Cabango that the 18-year-old will undoubtedly learn from, but he showed flashes of brilliance all evening, holding up the ball well and coming close midway through the first half with an eye-catching overhead kick.

He will have perhaps been a little frustrated on an evening where Cardiff struggled to really assert themselves, but his positioning and reading of the game nevertheless looked promising.

Dan Martin

A left-back by trade, the 19-year old was deployed on the wing on Wednesday evening and put in a very encouraging performance.

Martin, a key figure in Jarred Harvey's under-23s side following a successful trial at the beginning of the season, looked a threat on the left side midfield before being replaced after the break, putting in several inviting balls into the box that probably should have been turned into concrete chances by his peers.

Joel Bagan

Linked up reasonably well with Martin Down the left, but was also ever-present all over the Cardiff back four.

Bagan, who joined the Buebirds from Southampton in the summer of 2018, is capable of playing a variety of positions and his versatility has helped him become a regular at under-18 level, having made 22 appearances.

His highlight here was a superb clearance off the line to deny Swansea's Ollie Cooper, displaying great awareness and vision to cover his goalkeeper before the Swans striker was able to get an audacious lob away.
