Wales newcomer Rhys Carre has revealed how Welsh rugby's Project Reset left his career prospects in limbo and initiated a move to European giants Saracens.

In April it was announced the highly-rated 21-year-old Cardiff Blues loosehead would be quitting the Arms Park for the Gallagher Premiership kings and Champions Cup holders next season.

And the front-rower, who has played just 19 senior games for the Blues, told The Rugby Paper uncertainty in Welsh regional rugby over Project Reset, helped contribute to his move across the border to Saracens.

"Six or eight weeks ago I didn't have a contract and I was going back and forth about what I wanted to do for the next two years," said Carre, who is part of Warren Gatland's extended World Cup training squad this summer for the tournament in Japan.

"I'm young, I haven't got much income behind me, I haven't been to university and I've put everything into rugby. If I hadn't been offered a contract I think I'd have had to have taken a couple of years out to go to university. I was looking at some courses.

"I got offered a new contract by the Blues in October but with Project Reset that had to be put on delay so I couldn't negotiate with the Blues at all until the end of April or early May. Everything was up in the air and I didn't know what was going on.

"While that was happening I was approached by Saracens and a few other English clubs. Who wouldn't want to speak to teams like that? Saracens are winners.

"I think most young players would have had their head turned by them and I think most would also join them. It's a new chapter for me and a chance to express myself on a new page."
