Cardiff's Wellfield Road has always had a handful of interesting eateries, shops and businesses on it.

It's the small, but bustling Roath street connecting Albany Road to Penylan and has recently been home to three of Cardiff's top restaurants according to TripAdvisor. Not bad for a street no longer than 0.2miles!

Anatoni's Pizzeria has just taken the top spot on the reviews website - which was previously held by its neighbour, Sushi Life - and a third Wellfield Road resident, Le Cafe du Chat Noir, is also in the top 10.

And as well as already-established favourites like Himalaya Tandoori, La Vita and Chai Street, Wellfield Road is due to get some more additions, including Waterloo Tea, - the popular teahouse is opening its sixth venue here - and Cardiff legend, Middle Eastern restaurant, Troy.

Kasim Ali, the owner of the Waterloo Tea group, is hoping that their newest addition will be open to tea-lovers in the spring.

Kasim grew up near Wellfield Road and he says there are many reasons why the street is a foodie neighbourhood.

"I would argue that we have local pubs/bars, pizzerias, grab-and-go offerings (Wok 2 Walk), sushi, Indian, fish and chips, and soon a teahouse, to rival any other areas in Cardiff," he said.

"There's a good balance between local businesses and nationals which helps retain identity and prevents it from becoming a soulless parade as some high streets have become. Fingers crossed it will be a blueprint of how local centres can be."

Kasim added that the troubles faced by the high street should be addressed by the government, who should provide more help for local businesses.

"No doubt, the death of retail is a concern," he said. "But businesses such as Wellfield Bookshop are well supported by locals. This is a question for the higher levels of government to see if they can level the playing field, or even tilt it in favour of local businesses versus the multi nationals."

Tony Frawley, Anatoni's owner and head chef, is modest about his pizzeria success, but his restaurant in the The Globe Centre, along with Sushi Life, has seen diners flock to the precinct at the Albany Road end of the street.

A great relationship with his landlord and a respect for his local customers are what makes Anatoni's a success, he said.

"If it wasn't for our customers we wouldn't have a pizzeria. So we have an obligation to them," added the chef who ran Anatoni's in Lakeside for four years between 2012 and 2016 before co-running DiMara's Italian restaurant.

In June last year Tony and his team opened in The Globe Centre.

"When I closed Anatoni's I was getting 200 plus messages asking me to reopen," said the restaurateur. "And when I came to reopening Anatoni's I wanted to be near the regular customers, because we owe them a lot.

"We are just a group of honest people who have had a  lot of help and luck. We've seen a lot of the regulars and there's new customers too.

"And we get on with all the others, everybody helps everybody - just like it was up in Lakeside.

"We try our best to give to local causes - Velindre, St Andrews Church down the street. You can't just take you have to give back as a business, too."

As well as the TripAdvisor favourites, Wellfield Road is also home to a multitude of other places.
