IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK HAVE BEEN RELAXED...BUT THERE ARE STILL SUPPOSED TO BE GUIDELINES IN PLACE AT THE STORES WE SHOP IN...BECAUSE THE THREAT OF THE VIRUS HASN'T GONE AWAY... THAT MAKES WHAT WE SAW AT A NATIONAL RETAILER'S JACKSON STORE CONCERNING FOR SOME... BURLINGTON COAT FACTORY HAS TWO STORES IN JACKSON... ONE AT METRO CENTER MALL, AND ANOTHER ON COUNTYLINE ROAD... THE DISCOUT RETAILER HOLDING A SALE WITH DEEP DISCOUNTS, AND CONSUMERS WERE READY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE... WE DID SEE SIGNS AT THE COUNTY LINE STORE THAT WARNED SHOPPERS ONLY A MAXIMUM OF 159 SHOPPERS WOULD BE ALLOWED INSIDE AT A TIME... IT ASKED THOSE WITH A COUGH OR FEVER NOT TO ENTER, AVOID PHYSICAL CONTACT, WEAR A FACE COVERING, AND PRACTICE THE RECCOMENDED SOCIAL DISTANCING OF 6 FEET... BUT AT BURLINGTON IN THE METRO CENTER, IT DOESN'T APPEAR THE RULES WERE ENFORCED THE SAME WAY... WE SAW SHOPPERS WHO WEREN'T FOLLOWING THOSE GUIDELINES... PEOPLE WAITING IN LONG LINES AROUND THE PERIMITER OF THE STORE...BUT NOT AT 6 FEET APART... AND AT THE REGISTER...THERE WERE ALSO QUITE A FEW SHOPPERS NOT WEARING MASKS IN CLOSE PROXIMITY OF OTHERS... SO MANY PEOPLE WERE IN THE STORE, WE WONDERED, IS THIS A FIRE CODE VIOLATION? NO, I DIDN'T SEE A FIRE CODE VIOLATION IN THOSE VIDEOS...WHAT I DID SEE IS PEOPLE NOT PRACTICING THE SOCIAL DISTANCING CHIEF ELLIOTT HOLMES IS THE DIVISON CHIEF OF THE CITY OF JACKSON'S FIRE MARSHALL'S OFFICE... HIS DEPARTMENT ISSUES CITATIONS AND SUMMONS FOR VIOLATIONS OF FIRE CODES...IF THERE ARE VIOLATIONS... IT STARTS WITH A BUSINESS BEING WRITTEN UP... IT WOULD GO INTO ENVIRONMENTAL COURT, AND AT THAT PARTICULAR TIME, A JUDGE WOULD BASE THE FINE BECAUSE IT'S ACTUALLY A MISDEMEANOR CHIEF HOLMES SAY SOCIAL DISTANCING VIOLATIONS ARE ENFORCED BY POLICE... BUT, HE SAYS THERE ARE THINGS WE SHOULD KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR WHEN IT COMES TO THE FIRE CODE... IF THERE'S ANY OBSTRUCTION OF THE EXITS, WHERE YOU HAVE A GREAT AMMOUNT OF PEOPLE, AND THE WALKWAY OR ENTRYWAY IS OBSTRUCTED. THAT'S A GREAT SIGN OF A PLACE THAT MIGHT BE OVER CROWDED CHIEF HOLMES SAYS YOU CAN REPORT POTENTIAL VIOLATIONS BY CALLING FIRE DISPACH, OR THE JACKSON FIRE DEPARTMENT FIRE MARSHALL'S OFFICE, AND THEY WILL INVESTIGATE... WE LEARNED THAT THE BURLINGTON ON COUNTY LINE CLOSED EARLY TONIGHT BECAUSE THEY WERE OVER CAPACITY, BUT THEY WILL REOPEN TOMMOROW... TROY JOHNSON, 16 WAPT NEWS AT 10... More businesses in Jackson are starting to open up, but with the large crowds, concerns grow in stores about social distancing and the possibility of fire code violations. Burlington Coat Factory has two stores in Jackson, one at the Metro Center Mall, the other on County Line Road. The discount retailer holding a sale with deep discounts and consumers were ready to take advantage. Those with a cough or fever were asked not to enter the business. Employees also ask customers to avoid physical contact, wear a face mask, and practice the recommended social distance. At the Burlington in the Metro Center, however, it did not appear the rules were enforced the same way. People were waiting in long lines around the perimeter of the of the store, but did not follow the 6-feet guidelines. At the register, several shoppers were also not wearing a face mask. Chief Elliott Holmes is the division chief of the city of Jackson's Fire Marshall's Office. Chief Holmes said his department issues citations and summons for violations of any fire codes. Chief Holmes said social distancing violations are enforced by the police. He said there are things people should keep an eye out for when it comes to the fire code.
