A parade Saturday is
intended to bring south Jackson residents together in an effort to build a stronger and safer community, organizers said.
The second annual South Jackson Proud Parade is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the Save-A-Lot grocery store on McDowell Road, and will end at Cardozo Middle School. The event is presented by the Association of South Jackson Neighborhoods along with Jackson leaders and clergy.
“It’s a great way for everyone to come together and show pride in our city,” said Ernest Ward, president of ASJN. “When we stick together, the possibilities of crime decrease.”
Organizers said the parade is in response to a surge in violent crimes in recent weeks.
Jackson City Councilman Aaron Banks is working with his staff to help organize the event.
“South Jackson is often the forgotten part of the city, but it is residentially rich. This parade sparks a spirit of value which enhances the care needed for our communities,” Banks said. “(The Jackson Police Department) can’t do it by themselves. It’s up to us to call out crime. If you see something, say something.”
Organizers said parade goers can park between Raymond Road and Highway 18, in the grocery store parking lot or at Cardozo Middle School. Parking is allowed along the parade route. Lawn chairs may be set up, but should not be in the street, or blocking any business entrances, organizers said.
