Exclusive: Red or green? RNC headed to New Mexico for winter meeting

.

The Republican National Committee is scheduled to hold its annual winter meeting at a resort near Albuquerque, N.M., as the national party gears up to win President Trump a second term.

RNC Chairmwoman Ronna McDaniel is expected to be re-elected to another term without opposition during the Jan. 23-25 gathering, set for the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa, according to a copy of the registration form provided to committee members.

Though most likely absent the infighting that characterized some of the RNC meetings during former President Barack Obama’s tenure, this confab, coming a year before the 2020 presidential primary season gets underway, could address concerns about possible long-shot challenges to the GOP nomination Trump might face.

RNC members also might discuss voter turnout operations for the upcoming campaign and take stock of the 2018 midterm elections, during which the GOP expanded its Senate majority but lost 40 seats and its majority in the House. The Trump campaign is partnering with the committee on a host of tasks, including field, data, and fundraising, similar to how it functioned in 2016.

New Mexico has been trending away from the Republican Party. The Democrats flipped the governor’s mansion and the 2nd Congressional District on Nov. 6. But Trump made an eleventh-hour bid to capture the state two years ago, and the party could be eyeing a resurgence.

Or perhaps they’ve just chosen the locale for the food. New Mexico’s unique style of southwestern cuisine is often characterized by dishes prepared with red and green chilies, depending on an individual’s preference.
