An off-duty FBI agent shot and killed a veterinarian at a brewery in New Mexico over the weekend.

Police said the man, identified as 43-year-old Cody Wrathall from Utah, pulled a gun after walking into the Nexus Brewery in Albuquerque before he was shot by at least one federal agent in the establishment on Saturday. Wrathall was brought to the hospital where he died.

Police said they responded to a call from a woman who reported being stalked by a man at the brewery, but would not confirm whether the man was Wrathall or why Wrathall was at the establishment in the first place. Witnesses said there were several gunshots, but no other injuries were reported by police.

“Off-duty federal agents saw an individual brandish a firearm inside,” Albuquerque officer Simon Drobik said, according to KRQE News 13. “They returned fire to stop his action to protect the female. That individual was shot by the federal agency.”

Wrathall worked as an equine veterinarian at the South Valley Large Animal Clinic in northern Utah, located nearly 600 miles north of Albuquerque. The co-owner of the establishment, Beau Beck, described Wrathall as a family-oriented man and a good worker.

“Dr. Wrathall was both a great employee and veterinarian for us. He was a great family man. He spent a lot of time with his three children,” Beck said. “Just a great employee, a great person and a great family man and that’s what we hope people will remember about him.”

Local reports say Wrathall had no criminal history in New Mexico and only some speeding tickets in Utah
