Pence hasn’t released tax returns since taking office

President Trump’s unreleased tax returns are getting all of the attention, but Vice President Mike Pence has yet to release any of his own since taking office.

Pence released 10 years of tax returns through 2015 during the 2016 presidential campaign, but hasn’t publicly released the three tax returns since he was elected.

The vice president’s office said the returns will not be released until audits are completed. A spokeswoman for Pence told the Wall Street Journal the vice president plans to release his tax returns before the 2020 election, as long as they are no longer under audit.

The president and vice president are subjected to mandatory audits, though there is no law preventing Trump or Pence from releasing their financial documents while under audit.

Their predecessors have released their tax returns before the audits were finished.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., has given the IRS a Tuesday deadline to turn over six years of Trump’s tax returns. If the administration refuses, it would escalate the standoff to a federal court to determine whether Neal has a legitimate purpose for the request.
