Terry McAuliffe to travel to South Carolina ahead of looming 2020 decision

Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is visiting South Carolina this week ahead of a self-imposed deadline to decide whether he’ll jump in the race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.

McAuliffe, who has repeatedly said he’ll announce whether he’ll launch a White House bid by Mar. 31, is the guest of honor at a meet-and-greet hosted by Don and Carol Fowler in Columbia, according to an online event invite.

McAuliffe, the former Democratic National Committee and National Governors Association chairman, has been relatively quiet during the past month after an uptick in cable news appearances before and immediately after the 2018 midterm elections. Recently, he issued statements and gave several interviews regarding the blackface controversy in Virginia that embroiled Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam and state Attorney General Mark Herring, also a Democrat. Democratic Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, at the same time, was accused of sexual assault by two different women. Fairfax has denied the allegations.

McAuliffe previously told CNN in January his political calculus won’t be based on whether former Vice President Joe Biden mounts a presidential campaign. Biden, who would occupy the same centrist lane in the primary field as McAuliffe, is widely speculated to be on the brink of declaring his candidacy for the White House for the third time.

“I do think Vice President Biden’s probably running from my conversations with him,” McAuliffe told the network this year. “He’s got to make his decision. Mine will be totally independent of what the vice president does. I’ve always been a big fan of Joe Biden’s. I hope he gets in the race. The more the merrier.”
