VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Police are investigating a weekend shooting that left a man dead and another hurt.

Around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Virginia Beach police tweeted that officers were responding to shots fired call in the 900 block of Prince William Court.

Dispatchers told 10 On Your Side the call came in at 12:33 a.m.

A woman named Brenda and her family heard gunshots instantly. Some very close to her son’s bedroom.

“He was sleeping in the bed and I was like get out of the window, get out of the bed, because we didn’t know where the shots were going,” she said. “The next thing I know we’re calling 911 and it was between 12:30 and 12:35 and the police were out here within 5 minutes.”

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the victim dead. The tweet also said two suspects were detained for questioning, and on January 14 police announced a Virginia Beach man, 20-year-old Zhakel Tyrese Lane, was arrested and charged with possessing a firearm while in possession of drugs. He’s being held in the Virginia Beach Jail.

Police have identified the victim as 24-year-old Sequanae Jahkeem Roper.

Officers said they gathered suspect vehicle information and located the car nearby occupied by two individuals.

The two individuals that occupied the suspect vehicle were detained for questioning.

During the investigation, police were notified about an adult victim, suffering from an apparent non-life threatening gunshot wound. The victim had transported themselves to a local hospital for treatment.

Investigators responded to the hospital and determined that both gunshot wounds occurred during the same event on Prince William Court.

10 On Your Side was at the scene of the shooting that happened at the Kings Grant Landing apartment complex, though police have not yet confirmed that information.

Brenda says she’s lived in this area for a long time and this whole incident has been scary, she just wishes things could go back to normal.

“Have peace, like back in the ’80s where you could leave your door open and welcome in the house with open arms, it’s not like that anymore,” she said.

Virginia Beach Police say this an active investigation and no further information is available at this time.
