Virginia Beach police said in a news release the city’s emergency communications received a call around 5 a.m. from somone who said they saw a vehicle drive straight into a lake at the intersection of Bold Ruler and Firefall drives.

Responding officers, firefighters and EMS staff could not locate the vehicle from the shore. The Virginia Beach Fire Department deployed boats as the EMS Marine Rescue Team used a sonar scanner to find the vehicle.

Divers found the vehicle, an SUV, and one person dead inside. That person was later identified as 26-year-old Jeconiah M. Westmoreland, of Virginia Beach.

Video from WAVY’s Rob Coble showed dive teams in the water and crews working to hoist the SUV out of the water.
