VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Authorities are investigating after an inmate died at the hospital shortly after being admitted to the Virginia Beach Correctional Center early Wednesday morning.

The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office says Andrew Joseph Abram, 35, died just before 4 a.m. at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital.

He was first admitted to the jail just past midnight after being denied bond on a felony charge for violating his first offender status and a misdemeanor charge, the sheriff’s office said.

However he was uncooperative with authorities and medical staff, and taken to the hospital “as a result of their observations of his behavior and out of concern for this health and safety.”

He arrived to Sentara Princess Anne at 1:05 a.m., and “despite extensive lifesaving efforts,” died three hours later. The sheriff’s office says no foul play is suspected, and the cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Medical Examiner in Norfolk.

The sheriff’s office says Abram’s death is under investigation by the Virginia Beach Police Department, the sheriff’s office’s professional standards office and the Virginia Department of Corrections.
