VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Saturday is a day to celebrate life for Abby Furco’s family.
Abby was diagnosed with cancer 8 years ago on February 16, and 10 On Your Side has been following Abby’s journey since 2016.
Her mom says 8 years ago today is when doctors told the family she had leukemia. She’s been a fighter ever since.
Last month, WAVY met up with Abby when she celebrated the 4-year anniversary of receiving a life-saving bone marrow transplant.
Her family says after the bone marrow transplant, she developed graft-versus-host disease, a condition where the donated marrow attacks her body.

Since then, doctors have diagnosed her with chronic graft-versus-host disease.
Her mom says the disease has caused the layers of muscles in her legs to not work properly.
She’s now on a treatment plan, starting with a high dose of steroids. She’ll get infusions starting in two weeks.
Despite all she’s going through, her mother says she’s still a fighter, and loves being around her friends at school that continue to lift her spirits.
