NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The USS Abraham Lincoln successfully completed a test of its weapons systems out in the Atlantic Ocean.

U.S. Navy officials said the test was part of the Combat Systems Ship Qualification Trials, which looked at the ship’s abilities to operate onboard weapons systems.

Part of this included looking at the ship’s ship’s self-defense system (SSDS) — and live-firing each weapons system at a target.

Missiles launch from the ship successfully intercepted subsonic, sea-skimming drones flown out over the Atlantic from Naval Air Station Oceana, officials said.

“This is my second CSSQT evolution,” Fire Controlman 2nd Class Tyler Greenlee said  in statement. “It’s not uncommon that a lot of fire control men never fire a missile in their career. We went three for three with our missiles, so it felt really good to succeed and know that our watch team can fight for the ship.”

Officials said the test is a critical step closer to getting the USS Abraham Lincoln ready to launch as a deployment-ready warship.
