PASCAGOULA, Miss. (WAVY) — A destroyer set to call Norfolk its home port was damaged while undergoing construction in Mississippi.
According to a spokesman with Huntington Ingalls, back on March 29, a heavy ship delivering a floating dry dock to Ingalls Shipbuilding as Pascagoula, Mississippi, made contact with a test barge, which is under construction at Ingalls.
“The barge, which was supporting electrical work aboard the destroyer, in turn made contact with the destroyer. There were minor injuries treated at the scene by Ingalls’ medical personnel. The incident remains under investigation.”
According to the Navy’s website, the USS Delbert Black will be 513 feet long and 66 feet wide and with a displacement of approximately 9,200 tons. There will be 304 sailors aboard the destroyer. The website also says that the Delbert Black will be calling the Atlantic fleet its home port.
