RICHMOND, Va. (AP/WAVY) — The National Weather Service has confirmed that the remnants of Hurricane Florence spawned a total of 10 tornadoes in Virginia earlier this week.
The weather service’s office in Wakefield, Virginia, said Wednesday that meteorologists have confirmed additional tornadoes hit the area on Monday, from the original number of six. That brings the total for that day to 10.
Nine of the tornadoes were spread across the Richmond metro area. Another tornado hit Mecklenburg County, near the North Carolina border, the same day.
The 10th confirmed tornado was an EF-0 that touched down in Richmond, on the north side of the James River, with maximum winds of 75 mph.
The weather service said the tornado mainly snapped and uprooted trees along its 1.39-mile path.
One person was killed in Monday’s severe weather after a powerful EF-2 tornado touched down in Chesterfield County.
