A parade, during rush hour on Wednesday, closed part of Pratt Street in downtown Baltimore. Baltimore City Councilman Eric Costello criticized the timing, but Baltimore Mayor Jack Young said parades are always good for the city.Young said it doesn't really matter what day or time parades happen, because they're still going to disrupt traffic. He believes citizens want to see more parades in the city. "They've been having parades in the middle of rush hour ever since I've been born. It's just something that we do," Young said. Not according to Costello, who tweeted "I have no idea how this was approved, but I've explained to DOT this won't work next year at the same time.""People just have to change where they have to drive. I have no problem with parades, I wish we could do more because that's what the citizens want to see: More parades, more activities, so they can feel safe so they can enjoy themselves," Young said. "We are happy to be here, so there was a time, and the time was 3 p.m. and they complained also, so this time we put it at 5:30-6 p.m. and we're going to do our thing," Pamela Laing, a member of the host organization, said. The parade is part of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine Imperial Council session happening at the Baltimore Convention Center. It's a fraternal, social, and charitable organization."We try to let people see what we're all about. It's not just an organization where we sit indoors, but we come and give also to the community here in Baltimore, so we know that this is rush hour or whatever, but for us, this is the best time and it's a great time for us," Laing said. Some people who stopped to watch the show said it was worth disrupting rush hour traffic."We came down here to enjoy the city and we feel this is part of it. This is great, I'm so glad we were here at the time of the parade," visitor Tom Ford said. "I think that's something that needs to be negotiated between those two. I think there's a happy medium someplace, and I'm sure they'll work it (out)," resident William Marcus said. The organization's council session wraps up on Thursday.
