KIM: THAT IS THE REACTION AFTER FINDING OUT SOMEONE SHOT A 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL AND HER 38-YEAR-OLD MALE RELATIVE. >> THE VICTIMS WERE SITTING IN THEIR CAR AT A STOPLIGHT, WHEN AN UNKNOWN SUSPECT APPROACHED THE VEHICLE AND STARTED SHOOTING AND LEFT THE SCENE. KIM: THE VICTIMS DROVE AWAY AND FLAG DOWN AN OFFICER ON 300 BLOCK OF HILTON STREET. BOTH WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND ARE EXPECTED TO SURVIVE. >> IT IS A HORRIBLE THING THAT HAPPENS IN THE CITY, PEOPLE SHOOTING AT EACH OTHER, HURTING AT EACH OTHER. Teenager, man shot in northwest Baltimore, police say
A 13-year-old girl and a 38-year-old man were shot Sunday in northwest Baltimore."That's absolutely tragic. What is this world coming to?" said Linda, vice president of the Hanlon Community Association.Investigators said they believe the victims were in a car in the 3300 block of Gwynns Falls Parkway when they were shot around 4:30 p.m."The victims were actually sitting in their car at a stoplight on Gwynns Falls Parkway. That's when an unknown suspect approached the vehicle, began shooting at the victims and then fled the scene," Baltimore police Detective Jeremy Silbert said.Police said the victims drove away and flagged down an officer in the 300 block of Hilton Street for help. Both were taken to a hospital and are expected to survive."It's a horrible thing that happens in the city, people shooting each other, hurting one another. It's not a good fit for the city," said Wallace Edwards, a resident."I'm feeling that I have to be very alert and very aware and take all safeguards to ensure I'm covering myself, not leaving out late, making certain I let someone know when I'm coming home, not stopping for gas late at night, making sure when I pull in, I don't see strange bodies around," Linda said.Linda said crime has been on the rise here over the last couple of years in the Hanlon neighborhood. She is frustrated their once-safe neighborhood is going downhill."We need more police, we need more, we need more from the city than we're getting right now," Linda said."This was 4:30 in the afternoon yesterday, and that portion of Gwynns Falls is a pretty busy thoroughfare of vehicles, people. So we're hoping if anyone saw anything or heard anything, they'll give us a call," Silbert said.Anyone with information is asked to call police at 410-396-2221 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 866-7LOCKUP.
