PELHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Pelham officials report that a chlorine leak in the Indian Hills community in Pelham has been cleared.

Authorities cleared the barricades along Indian Springs Road and lifted the restrictions on area residents and businesses.

The chlorine spill occured at a water treatment plant on Trailridge Drive Wednesday morning. A nearby resident smelled the chemical in the air and reported it authorities.

Pelham Fire Chief Tim Honeycutt says 140 pounds of chlorine leaked into the area. Pelham police and fire instructed homeowners and area businesses to stay inside with their doors and windows closed as they mitigated the incident.

Around 2:40 Wednesday afternoon, authorities reported that all levels were back to zero.

According to Honeycutt, one person was transported to the hospital as a result of the incident.

The cause of the leak is not known.
