BATON ROUGE- An innocent elderly woman was shot Friday morning during an argument between two neighbors.

It comes at a time where homicides and shootings are rising in the city.

The Baton Rouge Police Department responded to the shooting on N. 46th Street near Gus Young Avenue around 10 a.m.

State Representative C. Denise Marcelle was on the scene at the time of the gunfire.

"There's too many bullets lying on the ground. It sounds like a war zone," Marcelle said.

"I'm just praying for this community. I'm praying for the victim that was shot, I'm praying for everyone involved in this, and certainly the community and the people that I serve," Marcelle said.

She spoke with families involved and says these shootings happen far too often.

"How many mothers have to take their children to the graveyard? How many people do we have to prosecute? It's an overload on everyone. I believe the leaders have to come together and stand up against these senseless shootings," she said.

Officers say the woman was shot in the hip and has been released from the hospital.

"We have to answer this by the community. The leaders in the community actually have to stand up against this violence in our city," Marcelle said.

One person was handcuffed and put in a police car, but authorities are still investigating.
