CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A portion of Providence Road in south Charlotte was shut down in both directions due to a downed tree and telephone pole.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say Providence Road was completely closed in both directions between Fairview Road and International Drive.

The City of Charlotte advised that commuters that Providence Road south of Sardis Road/Fairview Road would not be open for the evening commute.

Emergency utility repairs were necessary due to the fallen tree. Motorists should seek alternate routes & prepare for delays.

As of 6 p.m., both outbound lanes and one inbound lane of Providence Road were reopened for vehicular traffic.

Heavy rain started falling in the Charlotte area and is expected to continue. The rain will be a heavy and steady through late morning, then beginning to taper off as we work into the afternoon.

There’s no word on when the road is expected to reopen.
