Vermont wildlife officials have confirmed that a bobcat that bit three people in the Upper Valley had rabies.

Authorities say the bobcat bit two women in the Hartford area Wednesday. Vermont game wardens then shot the animal in a White River Junction parking lot.

Officials say a third person was bitten Tuesday in the same area and contacted authorities after seeing media coverage. They say the bobcat entered the man's car and bit him.

All of the individuals are being treated for the potentially fatal disease.

Vermont Fish & Wildlife officials said the attacks were highly unusual and that of the 70 bobcats tested for rabies between 2005 and 2017, only five were found to have the virus.
