Burlington is canceling Vermont's largest Independence Day celebration.

Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger made the announcement on Friday that there will be no fireworks show on the third of July. The annual event draws thousands to Burlington's shoreline, packing Waterfront Park and other spots along the lake. The mayor cited the governor's order last week canceling county fairs and festivals, saying there is no way to maintain social distancing at the fireworks show.

"There is just no way for these large gatherings that involve people coming into close contact with each other --sometimes for extended periods of time -- to happen safely with the threat of the virus," he said.

Locals who have attended the Independence Day celebration in the past, like Molly Higgins and Kate Sheeser say they are sad but understand the decision.

"It makes a lot of sense for safety reasons, I wouldn't want people, crowding the waterfront and everything," Burlington resident Kate said.

"I think the initial reaction is, 'oh that is a huge bummer' but we all have to make sacrifices right now and I completely understand and agree with that," Burlington resident Molly said.

Mayor Weinberger asked Burlington residents to submit ideas for alternative events that could be held instead of the July 3rd Fireworks, as well as other events throughout the summer.

The city is also canceling all events at Waterfront Park through August.
