The State of Vermont is holding onto nearly $90 million of unclaimed funds.

The money is made up of mostly uncashed refund checks and unclaimed property.

Last fiscal year the Treasurer's Office estimates an average payout of $379. More than 17,000 claims were filed returning customers about $7 million.

The department says that's the largest amount of money returned in state history.

For those who have not collected their money, it's not going anywhere. The state has to keep your fortune safe until you claim it. The law requires the treasurer's office to try to track you down. They attend fairs, print newspaper inserts and advertise on TV.

Still, the state's biggest challenge is getting people to fill out the claim forms.
