Montpelier has a new look following the weekend demolition of a building in the heart of downtown.

The former Gulf gas station on the corner of State Street and Governor Davis Avenue was razed early Sunday morning to make way for a new three-story building to be built over the next year.

The owner of the property, former Barre Mayor Thom Lauzon, says the old building dated back to the late 1940s and was not salvageable because of contamination from various petroleum products. He says he will submit plans for a three-story office and retail building to the Montpelier Development Review Board early next year with the hopes of completing the project by the spring of 2020.

For Lauzon, who owns many properties in Barre, it's his first project in the capital city. He says plans for the demolition came together quickly and that the recent rain storm, combined with low traffic volume over the pre-holiday weekend, made for the perfect opportunity to move ahead.

Lauzon says he has talked with city and state officials about using the empty lot for parking over the winter.
