Authorities say a Massachusetts State Police trooper shot and injured a carjacking suspect from Vermont who was driving toward the trooper as he put down a tire deflation device.

Massachusetts State police in a statement say the suspect, identified by police as 33-year-old Daniel Williams, of South Burlington, Vermont, was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield after the shooting on Route 2 east in Shelburne Falls at about 9 a.m. Friday.

The suspect remains in the hospital and it’s not clear if he has an attorney. The district attorney is investigating the shooting. The trooper’s name was not made public.

According to South Burlington police, Williams approached a pick-up truck in the parking lot of a Shelburne Road convenience store early Friday morning. When the owner asked Williams if he needed help, a struggle ensued. The truck owner fell to the ground and Williams fled the scene in the truck. Officers in southwestern Vermont observed the stolen truck and a pursuit followed. The pursuit ended due to safety reasons.

The pursuit picked up in Massachusetts with State Police, where it ended in the shooting.

South Burlington Police investigators will be working in conjunction with the Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s Office on criminal charges related to the motor vehicle theft.

Williams was recently released from custody following a high-profile South Burlington arrest in 2019. Williams had been facing criminal charges related to an incident of criminal threatening and possession of a hoax explosive device, those cases were dismissed in 2020.
