Vermont state employees, including those in the governor's office, were evacuated Tuesday after smoke alarms went off in the Pavilion Building.

Fire officials say smoke was reported around 1:30 p.m. on the fourth floor of the building coming from an HVAC system. Prior to the alarm going off, they say the power in the building was going off and on. The cause remains under investigation

About 280 state employees work in the building and all of them were sent over to the Statehouse. They returned to work about an hour later.

Officials say the governor was traveling Tuesday and was not in the building.
