A man is dead in Rutland and neighbors have a lot of questions.

Rutland City Police say a probation officer was doing a welfare check at a house on Harrison Avenue and got no response.

That's when they investigated and found a man dead inside. Police are calling that death suspicious.

"Upon going out back looking in the window, they saw a body laying on the floor appears to be in a suspicious nature," Rutland City Police Commander David Lachance said.

Police found the body at about 10 a.m. on Thursday.

As of Thursday night, police say there were red flags but would not say yet how the man died. Police say they would not get into details.

Neighbor Stephen Priur says he heard about the police presence on his street while at work.

"Anytime you see a massive police presence, it can be shocking cause you never know what the story is," Priur said.

Priur says he has never talked with the man who died before, and now his neighborhood is playing the waiting game.

Reporter Ike Bendavid: It was a probation check. Was the person who was found dead the person they were checking on?

Commander David Lachance: I am not going to confirm that at this point
