It's the end of an era for the Montpelier Police Department. Chief Anthony Facos is retiring after 35 years of service.

Facos started part-time in 1985 as an auxiliary state trooper. He then joined the Montpelier Police two years later and served as chief for the past 13 years.

The chief says he's advocated for investments in mental health and community resources to address underlying problems in communities.

"To how police interact in their communities and so how do we make sure that we maintain the most important pillar, trust and legitimacy-- mental health response and our ability to be effective," Facos said.

Facos says he plans to spend time with his family and see what opportunities are available.

The city's new chief, Brian Peete, will be sworn in next Wednesday.
