COVINGTON, Ky. -- City officials hope the installation of 500 bike racks will encourage residents to leave their cars at home.

Ride the Cov, a group devoted to making the city bike-friendly, will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. Thursday outside Moonrise Doughnuts in Latonia.

Ride the Cov President Joe Koehl said each slot on the bike racks can hold two bikes, bringing 1,000 parking spots to Covington. Koehl said the racks will provide secure parking spots in hundreds of locations throughout Covington.

Residents can click hereto submit a request for a bike rack in their neighborhood. Businesses and organizations can submit requests as well.

Racks can only be installed in publicly-accessible areas, like parking lots or entrance ways. Ride the Cov is requesting a $50 donation per rack to help cover operational expenses.
