25th human case of West Nile virus diagnosed in Massachusetts
Another Massachusetts resident has contracted West Nile virus, Massachusetts health officials announced Monday. The patient, a man in his 70s from Hampshire County, is the state's 25th case of the year. There were only six human cases of the virus in 2017. “This latest case is a bit unusual in that most of our cases have been from urban areas and this man is from Hampshire County, where cases of WNV are not seen as often," said Public Health Commissioner Dr. Monica Bharel.West Nile virus is typically transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Health officials say people over age 50 are typically at a higher risk for severe illness, but people of all ages can be infected.Symptoms of the infection include fever and flu-like illness. In rare cases, more severe illness can occur.
