Boston University student Erin Edwards killed in Georgia murder-suicide
A promising Boston University student and her older brother were shot and killed by their mother in an apparent murder-suicide in Georgia.
Erin Edwards, 20, was attending BU on a four-year scholarship from The Posse Foundation, which supports students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential. She was a rising junior in the journalism program and had just completed an internship in New York.
"We are devastated by the tragic loss of Boston University student Erin Edwards. We will be providing services to students and community members as they return back to campus over the next few days," university officials said in a statement.
According to Cobb County Police, 58-year-old Marsha Edwards shot and killed her daughter and her son, 24-year-old Christopher Edwards, in their townhome. Edwards then turned the gun on herself, police said.
Authorities found the bodies Wednesday evening.
Marsha Edwards was the ex-wife of Dr. Christopher Edwards, an orthopedic surgeon who is also chairman of the Atlanta Housing Authority.
Erin Edwards and her mother had recently traveled together to Italy.
“Erin was a stellar student and community member," a BU classmate said about Erin Edwards. "She lit up any room she walked into with her smile, charisma and her fabulous fashion and poise. I always looked up to her. I admired her passion and dedication to everything she did. She was involved in multiple community groups, within the areas of journalism and racial activism. Erin was a beautiful woman, activist and journalist. What happened to her is a terrible tragedy, and I still can’t wrap my head around it. The BU community will miss her deeply. Erin was on her way to becoming a super star, a world shaker and an even stronger woman than she already was. The fact that she won’t be able to do that breaks my heart.”
