Hundreds take part in silent vigil at West Roxbury rotary in honor of George Floyd
Hundreds of people gathered peacefully along a rotary in Boston's West Roxbury neighborhood for a vigil in honor of George Floyd.
The organizers of the "Silent Vigil for Black Lives" said the event was planned to be a peaceful, silent, 30 minute vigil at the Holy Name Rotary Monday evening.
The protesters remained quiet throughout the vigil, but vehicles driving around the rotary honked their horns in support of the demonstrators.
No arrests were reported by the Boston Police Department, but there was a large police presence in the area. The District E-5 Police Station was also fenced off.
The CVS pharmacy was one of several Centre Street businesses in the area that placed plywood over windows and doors Monday.
The Corrib Pub and Restaurant on Centre Street also boarded up its windows and doors, and the 7-Eleven store located close to the vigil location also covered its windows and doors.
The move to board up came less than 24 hours after violence and looting damaged dozens of businesses in downtown Boston Sunday night following a day of mostly peaceful protests.
Boston Police Commissioner William Gross said Monday that 53 people were arrested Sunday, about half of them city residents.
