Multiple protests occur across Massachusetts communities Thursday
Multiple demonstrations were held in Massachusetts communities Thursday evening, where attendees called for justice in the death of George Floyd and demanded social change.Floyd, a black man, died on Memorial Day, while being pinned to the ground by the knee of a Minneapolis police officer. That officer, and three others, now face charges in connection with the death. In Jamaica Plain, where a Black Lives Matter vigil is held monthly, Floyd's death and other recent killings brought out many additional attendees. Meanwhile, another large crowd gathered in Newton, where they blocked Washington Street. Unlike the silent event planned for Jamaica Plain, attendees in Newton were chanting the names of victims of police brutality.A small but vocal crowd gathered Thursday in Randolph, chanting Floyd's name while a memorial service for him was happening in Minnesota. Attendees and local police took a knee together as the event kicked off. In Taunton, another group gathered on the grounds of First Parish Chruch at Chruch Green, across from the police station. Earlier Thursday, in Fall River, dozens of people attended a rally at Heritage State Park. Fall River police were present and offered masks to demonstrators before the rally. Another rally is planned in Fall River for Saturday at Lafayette Park.In Waltham, people of all ages gathered for a rally on the Common at the corner of Moody and Main Street. It was described as a family gathering.
