Massachusetts man infected with EEE now in coma, family says
A man in Massachusetts infected with the state’s first case of Eastern equine encephalitis since 2013 is in a coma, according to family members.The victim was not identified, however state health officials said that he is from Plymouth County. The Rochester Council on Aging confirmed on Facebook that the case is in their town. Rochester is one of nine communities now at a critical risk level for the mosquito-borne illness, the Standard Times reported.A woman who lives in Rochester posted on Facebook that her father has been diagnosed with the virus. She said he is now in a coma. She called the news “shocking and heartbreaking."The woman said they do not know where or when the mosquito bite happened. Town leaders are urging everyone to take precautions and use insect repellant and avoid being outside during peak mosquito times. Ground spraying that has been going on since July was escalated to an aerial spraying campaign last week over critical risk towns.
