Pair rescued from Merrimack River after clinging to canoe for 2 hours
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two people clinging to an overturned canoe in the Merrimack River.
Riverboat crews spotted two people holding on and waving for help while on patrol near Plum Island Saturday night. It turns out they had been stranded for almost two hours.
The area where they were found, Joppa Flats, can have a strong current, according to Coast Guard officials.
"The river is definitely not necessarily something you want to underestimate," said Master Chief Shawn Crahen of the Coast Guard's Merrimack River station. "There's definitely -- even on a nice summer day with calm conditions -- there are dangers and challenges that you need to be aware of and be prepared for."
Crahen said water temperatures, even in the summer, can be low enough to lead to hypothermia.
The Coast Guard said if it were not for both persons wearing life jackets, the situation could have been worse.
The crew returned both people and their canoe to their Plum Island home.
